Passivation is a process to generate rapidly chromium oxide to prevent corrosion of freshly worked stainless steel.
Chromium oxide is formed from the chromium content in stainless steel.

This natural process of chromium oxide formation at room temperature on air requires some hours. Its speed can be increased by use of HNO3 acid.

The formed Cr2O3 passivation layer is regenerative. The layer thickness ranges between 10 and 30 Ǻ (1 and 3 nm).

Passivation of the inner and outer surfaces of Nanosols stainless steel hollow needles and cannulas is standard treatment.
